They’ve changed the shape of Toblerones and yes, this affects Ireland

8 November 2016 Latest News National News News Quirky News

The ongoing Brexit saga in the UK continues to have far reaching and hitherto unthought of consequences – take the humble Toblerone bar for example.

The long time duty free shopper’s favourite (Who hasn’t bought one of those colossal bars going through an airport?) is the latest in a line of foodstuffs to feel the chill economic wind and be forced to make some alterations. Mondolez International, which makes the chunky chocolate bars, said it has decided to widen the gap between the peaks and to reduce the weight of its 400g and 170g bars while keeping the price and the packaging the same. There is some good news though. Here in the Republic of Ireland the 170g bar, which will be reduced to 150g in the UK, will remain at its full size.

Naturally the social media world was soon ablaze with outrage over this decision, so much so that the company was forced to make a statement defending and explaining the decision to alter the bar, blaming the rising costs of ingredients. “We carry these costs for as long as possible, but to ensure Toblerone remains on-shelf, is affordable and retains the triangular shape, we have had to reduce the weight of just two of our bars in the UK, from the wider range of available Toblerone products” says Mondolez.

Whether this calms the storm or not we shall have to wait and see!
