Tramore ‘Town Centre’ Revamp
At a recent meeting held under the Retail Excellence Ireland heading, a revamp of Tramore Town Centre was proposed. The CEO of Retail Excellence Ireland fully believes that Tramore has great potential, but lacks a focal centre point to the town. The area that was deemed most worthy for development was the area around the Cross of Broad Street, Queen Street, Main Street & Strand Road upper. The proposals could see new seating areas provided, tree planting, landscaping & footpaths widened, making the area more visually attractive and enjoyable to pedestrians.
Michael Walsh, CEO of Waterford City and County Council stated that an investment of €1 Million had been allocated by the council to allow this venture to proceed, citing that a council architect would be available to work on the project, while being tasked with the remit of exploring Tramore’s potential.
Local stakeholder, Mr David Fitzimmons stated that “The real Town Centre is somewhere between the Prom, and Summerhill”, and so developing a new Town Centre at the Cross in the Victorian Heart of Tramore, was in his view, the best solution. He also stated, that parking in the town was an issue as did Michael Clarke. However deferred any discussion on parking, commercial rates and similar matters, stating that he hoped “the will was there to move forward”.
In order to move this plan forward, it is now seen as an essential part of the plan to engage the community in it. It is more than likely that a group of people drawn from local traders, landlords, property owners, estate agents as well a citizen representation, will form a committee to engage with the local authority regarding the plans.
Mr Fitzimmons also stated that he envisaged Tramore becoming a destination shopping location, In order for this to happen however, Tramore needs to attract more artisan and boutique type outlets. He also stated that Tramore’s evening economy had issues, with difficulties arising with the availability of Taxi’s between Waterford City and Tramore, hindering people from the City coming to Tramore for a night out. On this issue, he noted previous calls for a Taxi rank within the town, stating that maybe this suggestion should be looked at once again
