Update: 20 Year old charged in connection with fatal assault in Tramore
Niall Hewison from ClarinWood, Tramore appeared before a special sitting of Waterford District Court having been charged with assault causing harm to Edmund Rice, 54, at Strand Street, Tramore in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Detective Sgt Shay Keevan gave evidence of arresting and charging Hewison who made no reply to the charge.
The defendant did not speak throughout the short hearing.
An application was made for free legal aid, which was granted by the Judge.
Gardai asked that a number of conditions be set in respect of bail including that Hewison remain sober at all times, that he signs on at his local garda station three times a week and that he hands over his passport to Gardai.
Mr Rice was found unconscious on the street and was rushed to University Hospital Waterford. He was treated by doctors and was in intensive care when he died early this morning.
It is understood Mr Rice had been living in Tramore, but was not originally from the town. Gardai are making efforts to notify all his relatives.
The area where he was found was sealed off and was forensically examined by Garda Technical experts.
A post mortem examination was carried out by the Assistant State Pathologist in Waterford.
Gardai say they are awaiting the results to determine the course their investigation will take.
They will not be releasing the findings for operational reasons.
